Maria Rasskazova viendra nous présenter ses travaux sous forme d’une pré-soutenance de sa thèse intitulée «The Economics of Content Creation on Social Media Platforms: Business Models and Governance ».
Abstract : This doctoral dissertation examines the dynamics of content creation on new media platforms. The latter are organised as multi-sided markets connecting content creators with an audience and are, for the most part, financed by advertisers. In this setting, managing interactions between the different sides of the market is essential for generating revenues.
Platforms’ central position enables them to extract the economic value from the transactions without owning the resources. To maximise their profits, platform owners may be incentivised to implement designs and rules that could affect the participation of each side of the market.
In this thesis, we investigate the impact of the platform governance practices on the production of cultural content. The results of the three empirical chapters of this dissertation highlight two important dynamics: the production of online cultural goods and the influence of the platforms’ rules on sides’ participation. Digitisation and the rise of new production models have reduced the role of traditional cultural intermediaries. The latter have been largely replaced by platforms. They enabled new forms of production and sources of revenue. Moreover, through their choice of designs and rules, these platforms affect the distribution (visibility) and consumption of content. Our findings contribute to ongoing debates about the transformation of cultural industries and offer empirical evidence relevant to the discussions of a public intervention in regulating platform practices and online cultural production.
